Goal Statement
My goal is to graduate from the Practical Nursing program and reap the rewards of a meaningful career in emergency care. I chose nursing because the role is parallel to my experience in the hospitality industry in that the client comes first, personal connection is valued and problem solving is a priority. The program will assist in achieving my goals because it is concise and offers infinite opportunities for prospective continuing education.
Philosophy of Practical Nursing
My nursing philosophy is that a full range of unbiased care be given to anyone in need of medical assistance. It is the role of a nurse to preserve dignity in those who are reliant on others, to educate on the practice of illness prevention and lifestyle impacts, and to use self-reflection as a guide for development. The core of nursing is to be continuously expanding competence to provide evidence-based client centered care. Trust is at the forefront of this role therefore effective communication and creating connections with clients are skills every nurse should possess. I will embrace this philosophy professionally as it is aligned with my personal credos of inclusiveness, non-judgement, supportiveness and the use of critical thinking in decision making.
Standards of Practice
The Nursing Standards of Practice paint an excellent picture of the qualities every client would desire in the nurse providing his or her care. These standards are imperative to ensure nurses give the same client centered care in all facilities. The alignment to my philosophy is shown in the advocating of continuous learning and encouragement to promote ethical evidence-informed policy and practice. Communication also displays congruency as it is essential in service to the public and the nurse-client relationship.
Values Statement
My personal values include challenge and impact. Challenge requires diligence and tenacity while impact requires accountability as it involves intervening in client’s lives. My professional values comprise of competence and proactivity. It is vital for a nurse to be able to deal with situations as they arise. Their job is also to anticipate problems before they start, by being proactive. My personal values support my philosophy because challenge and impact are crucial in tracking care development. My professional values are also lined up with a nurses’ role in rehabilitation and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle and illness prevention.
